The revival of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, which was nominated for eight 2023 Tony Awards May 2, continues to be a box-office draw. The production, co-starring Tony nominee Josh Groban and Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford, was the second-highest grossing production of the week ending May 7, taking in $1,826,374 at the box office, over $40,000 more than the previous week.
Three new Tony-nominated musicals also saw bumps at the box office last week: Some Like It Hot, recipient of 13 Tony nominations, the most of any production of the season ($876,193, up $115,448 from the previous week), New York, New York ($1,019,121, up $75,728), and Shucked ($620,075, up $69,529). And, the Sean Hayes-led Good Night, Oscar—nominated for three Tonys—brought in $702,454, up $62,130.
It was the long-running, Tony-winning Disney musical The Lion King, however, that was the top-grossing production of the week, taking in $1,981,150. Others in the top five included the aforementioned Sweeney Todd, Hamilton ($1,778,225), MJ the Musical ($1,653,203), and Wicked ($1,484,958). Other shows in the Million Dollar Club: Funny Girl ($1,448,544), Moulin Rouge The Musical ($1,250,852), Aladdin ($1,235,940), Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ($1,150,812), Parade ($1,012,351), and & Juliet ($1,007,244).
Overall, the 34 running Broadway productions took in $30,153,133, a slight dip from the previous week, which had brought in over $31 million with 35 shows on the Main Stem.
