Industry News Bye Bye Birdie...Playbill Leaves Twitter

Because of its "tolerance for hate, negativity, and misinformation," our time with the social media platform has come to an end.

In a statement serving as our final-ever post on Twitter, Playbill has announced that we will no longer use the social media platform following an expanded "tolerance for hate, negativity, and misinformation."

@Playbill and all associated handles—including @PlaybillTravel, @PLAYBILLder, @PlaybillArts, and @PlaybillStore—will no longer be active as of today, November 11. Regardless of blue or gray checkmarks, if you see a tweet from a Twitter account that contains our name, please understand that it is not us.

Playbill will also continue to participate in Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Our participation on those three social media platforms are subject to ongoing review. Readers are also encouraged to subscribe the Playbill Post, a daily email newsletter bringing the latest in theatre news directly to your inbox.

“Our team at Playbill and I did not come to this decision lightly," shares Playbill CEO and Chairman Philip S. Birsh. "As a news outlet and publisher, leaving any platform that allows us to share our coverage of Broadway is a large risk. However, it became clear to us that whatever risk this represented, it became clearer that our principles outweighed all other considerations. While we know that no social media platform is perfect or without its moderation issues, to stay on a platform that is doing little to deter hate speech and misinformation is dangerous for us as a brand and as members of our community. In the past few weeks, instances of racial slurs and harassment have substantially increased; things have gotten worse, not better. We want our followers to feel safe interacting with each other, and with us. We want to be comfortable with the platforms we utilize.

"Lately, Twitter has chosen to sacrifice civility for hateful virality, while being reckless with its users’ data and privacy. Twitter is no longer a platform that we want to support with our presence, nor do we want our audience to support it. This is why we are abandoning Twitter. And if other social media companies take a similarly destructive route, we will respond accordingly.”
