Casting is complete for Prospect Theater Company's New York premiere of the award-winning indie-rock musical Lizard Boy, which will play Off-Broadway's Theatre Row this summer.
A hit at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Lizard Boy will begin previews June 1 prior to an official opening June 14 for a limited engagement through July 1.
With a book, music, and lyrics by Justin Huertas (Squirrel Girl), direction by Brandon Ivie (Prospect’s Jasper in Deadland), and music direction by Steven Tran (Squirrel Girl), the queer-indie-rock-action-romance tells the story of Trevor, a young man with green scaly skin who feels like a monster. When a powerful voice calls to him in a dream, however, he finds a date (on Grindr) and begins an adventure beyond his wildest apocalyptic nightmares.
The cast will feature the previously reported actor-musicians Huertas, Kiki deLohr, and William A. Williams. Newly announced for the production are understudies Kai An Chee (Mr. Holland’s Opus), Milo J. Marami (A Chorus Line), and Jacob Ryan Smith (Hamster & Gretel).
The design team includes scenic adaptor/environmental designer Suzu Sakai, costume designer Erik Andor, lighting designer Brian Tovar, sound designer Kevin Heard, and projection designer Katherine Freer with original production design by L.B. Morse. The production stage manager is Victoria Whooper, the assistant stage manager is Josh-Andrew Wisdom, the associate director is Cara Hinh, and the assistant music director is Keiji Ishiguri.
Lizard Boy is the winner of six 2021 San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards, including Best Entire Production, Best Stage Direction, and Best Ensemble. The original cast recording is available online.
