Off-Broadway News Dave Harris' Exception to the Rule Finds Its Off-Broadway Premiere Cast

The Roundabout Underground production centers on six Black high-school students stuck together in detention.

The world premiere of Exception to the Rule by playwright Dave Harris has announced its full cast. Originally planned for a 2020 run, the Roundabout Underground production will begin previews April 28, with an opening set for May 18. The limited engagement will run through June 26.

The play centers on six Black students stuck together, fighting and flirting their way through detention at the worst school in the city. The ensemble cast includes MaYaa Boateng, Malik Childs, Mister Fitzgerald, Toney Goins, Amandla Jahava, and Claudia Logan. Roundabout Resident Director Miranda Haymon will helm the production. 

Exception to the Rule will feature a sets by Reid Thompson and Kamil James, costumes by Sarita Fellows, lighting by Cha See, and sound by Lee Kinney
