Brooklyn Academy of Music's current Artistic Director David Binder will depart the nonprofit institution July after stepping into the role in 2019. He arrived at BAM following a career working in commercial theatre, including Broadway shows such as Hedwig and the Angry Inch and arts festivals.

“I feel like I’ve accomplished what I set out to do there, and I want to get back to making work and producing work,” Binder told The New York Times in an interview. “I want to keep growing.”

According to The New York Times, Binder will continue to serve as a consultant through next January while the search for a new artistic director is underway.

Under Binder's leadership, BAM presented the transfer of Cyrano starring James McAvoy, the debuts of more than 50 artistic companies, Simon Stone's Medea starring Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale, as well as developing a new spring music series and artist residency program. Next month, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan will star in Lorraine Hansberry's The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window.

Binder also shared with The New York Times plans to bring Hedwig and the Angry Inch to the West End, Thomas Ostermeier's An Enemy of the People to Broadway, and develop a yet-to-be-shared work with director Jamie Lloyd (Cyrano). He followed predecessors Joseph V. Melillo and Harvey Lichtenstein, who both worked at BAM for over 30 years each
