Off-Off-Broadway theatre company La MaMa has provided an emergency residency to exiled Russian stage director Dimitry Krymov, blacklisted by the Russian government following his public rebuke of its invasion of Ukraine. The residency will see the director helming two workshop productions with American casts.

Running December 9–22, the workshops will be performed in rep. Onegin (In Our Own Words) is adapted from the classic Alexander Pushkin novel about four Russian immigrants. The Americans will combine two short stories by Ernest Hemingway with Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms to explore American patriarchy.

The cast for the presentations will include Natalie Battistone, Tim Eliot, Annie Hagg, Kwesiu Jones, Jeremy Radin, Erich Rauch, Jackson Scott, Elizabeth Stahlmann, and Anya Zicer.

Performances will be open to the public, but not for reviews. Proceeds from performances December 9–11 will benefit Cash for Refugees, which works to support Ukrainian refugees.

Krymov, best known for his bold reimaginings of classic works, has been in the U.S. for safety reasons since staging The Cherry Orchard at Philadelphia's Wilma Theater earlier this year. According to the outspoken director, he had been accustomed to being able to direct the shows he wanted within Russia's state-funded theatre program until the recent outbreak of war with Ukraine. "I don't want to participate in it," shares Krymov of the current state of affairs in his home country.

The productions are not Krymov's first in the U.S.; along with Wilma's Cherry Orchard, Krymov staged Opus No. 7 at St. Ann's Warehouse in 2013 and The Square Root of Three Sisters at Yale in 2016.
