The upcoming film musical is inspired by The Princess and the Pea.

A new musical is in the works at Disney! According to DeadlinePenelope will be a fresh take on the fairytale The Princess and the Pea and is set to include original songs by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson and Broadway composer Laurence O’Keefe (Legally BlondeHeathers).

Robert Sudduth, co-executive producer on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the upcoming Grease musical prequel, is writing the script, with Will Gluck producing under Olive Bridge.

Michaelson made her Broadway debut in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, filling in for Brittain Ashford. The "Girls Chase Boys" singer is also writing the score for the upcoming world premiere of The Notebook, a new musical based on the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks. 

Along with her eight studio albums, Michaelson received an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category for the song "Build it Up," written for Hulu's limited series Little Fires Everywhere.

O'Keefe is best known for writing the score for three stage cult classics—Bat Boy: The Musical, Legally Blonde: The Musical, and Heathers: The Musical—all of which have been performed internationally.
