News Rapper Ice Cube and Hamilton Director Creating New Oliver Twist Musical The movie musical is being assembled for Disney.

Rapper Ice Cube, Hamilton director Thomas Kail and Disney are working on a new movie musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter.

The film will be a “modern musical take” on the story of an orphan boy who finds a kind of home in a den of young pickpockets and thieves in Victorian London. The story was also the basis of Lionel Bart’s popular West End and Broadway musical Oliver!, which was also made into an Oscar-winning film.

The film will be produced for Disney by another Broadway veteran, Marc Platt of Wicked, along with Jeff Kwatinetz of The Firm, who is also writing the story treatment along with Cube. Cube will also play Fagin in the musical, which is described as “crossing many genres, including hip-hop.”

No songwriters were listed.

Besides Hamilton, Kail’s credits include Fox-TV’s Grease Live!
