Simon Dawes Becomes a Planet to Have World Premiere Off-Broadway | Playbill

News Simon Dawes Becomes a Planet to Have World Premiere Off-Broadway Alex Moggridge’s new play with music will debut at Access Theater.

The world premiere of Alex Moggridge’s new play with music, Simon Dawes Becomes a Planet, will begin performances September 23 at Access Theater. Blending farce and music hall pantomime, the play tells the story of a boy born the size of a pea who grows to cosmic proportions.

Performances will run through October 8 with an official opening night set for September 24. Michael Lluberes directs.

The cast will feature Broadway veteran J. Anthony Crane, Meagan Kimberly Smith, Marilee Talkington, Chris French, Maya Jackson and Henry Vick.

In the first act, the boy, Simon, is so small he is never seen. In the second act, we see him traveling the world as a normal-sized man. By the third act, he has grown to the size of a planet. The production features live music by Natalie Paruz and original music by composer Jared M. Dembowski.

“Blessed with a strange and haunting singing voice, Simon weaves his way through a world where healthy and beautiful is not enough, encountering a parade of family, friends, lovers, and eccentrics, discovering fame, obscurity, and maybe just a little bit of happiness along the way,” according to production notes.

The play was a semi-finalist for the American Blues Theater’s 2016 Blue Ink Playwriting Award and received a workshop production as part of Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor Series in 2015.

Produced by Time Shared, the world premiere has set design by Stephan Moravski, lighting design by Scot Gianelli, costume design by Ryan Park and production stage manager is Sydney Golden.

Simon Dawes Becomes a Planet will play at Access Theater, located at 380 Broadway, New York. Tickets are $18 and available online at simondawes.brownpapertickets.com.
