Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford has joined the cast of Hulu’s upcoming Chippendales origin story Immigrant. The Hollywood Reporter says Ashford will play Irene Banerjee, wife of Steve Banerjee, who founded the famed male dancer club.
Kumail Nanjiani will play Banerjee while Murray Bartlett is set to be his business partner, Nick De Noia, widely recognized as the one who made Chippendales into part of the pop culture zeitgeist.
The limited series is co-written by Mehar Sethi and Rajiv Joseph, whose Letters of Suresh played Off-Broadway in the fall last year. Up next, Kenny Leon will direct the playwright’s King James at Steppenwolf.
Immigrant is created by Robert Siegel, who also serves as executive producer alongside Joseph, Nanjiani, Dylan Sellers, Jenni Konner, Ramin Bahrani, Emily V. Gordon, and Nora Silver. Siegel and Konner serve as co-showrunners, and Bahrani will direct.
