Video Watch the Official Trailer for the Elton John Biopic Rocketman The film about the Tony–, Oscar–, and Grammy-winning superstar hits theatres May 31.

From Tony-winning and Oscar-nominated writer Lee Hall and director Dexter Fletcher comes the latest in a line of musician biopics: Rocketman, centered around global superstar Elton John.

Focused on the consummate entertainer’s breakthrough years, Rocketman stars Taron Egerton as the music legend and Richard Madden as music manager John Reid. The movie from Paramount Pictures hits theatres beginning May 31.

Among John’s seemingly infinite accomplishments in the music industry, he has long enjoyed a career in theatre. Having technically made his Broadway debut in 1975 with his songs featured in Bette Midler’s Clams on the Half Shell Revue, he scored his first Broadway musical in 1997 with Disney’s The Lion King. (He had already won an Oscar for Best Original Song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from the animated feature film, and been nominated for two additional Oscars for “Hakuna Matata” and “Circle of Life.”) The Lion King garnered John his first Tony Award nomination.

In 2000, John penned the music for Disney’s Aida on Broadway, this time winning the Tony. After a short-lived run of his Lestat, John wrote the music for the stage musical adaptation of the film Billy Elliot, which featured a book by Rocketman’s screenwriter Hall. John won the Drama Desk for Outstanding Music, and he and Hall, who also provided the lyrics, were nominated for a Tony Award for Best Original Score. He is a five-time Grammy winner, including Best Musical Show Album for Aida and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his rendition of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”

At the 20th anniversary celebration of The Lion King on Broadway, John surprised audiences at the Minskoff Theatre with a performance of “Circle of Life.” He has confirmed he’s working on the soundtrack for the live action film version, as well.
