Laurie Metcalf stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon May 6 to talk about her fourth consecutive Tony Award nomination for her work in Hillary and Clinton on Broadway.
“I’m thanking my lucky stars that I get to work with incredible people at the top of their game year after year,” she said. “There’s nothing better for a theatre actor than to be on Broadway and to get nominated for a Tony.”
Metcalf said she loves working with John Lithgow, who plays the Bill to her Hillary. But Metcalf added that it’s the full team that keeps her coming back.
“[John]’s an excellent scene partner, so I get to do this show with him eight times a week,” she continued. “Lucas Hnath wrote it, who wrote A Doll’s House Part 2, which is one of the reasons that I wanted to sign on immediately, directed by Joe Mantello, my favorite director, produced by Scott Rudin... they make it easy.”
In the show, Metcalf and Lithgow play the Clintons but “in an alternative universe. She’s in the primary and she's running head to head with Barack Obama.”
