POSITION OVERVIEW

The Automation Carpenter is responsible for the operation and maintenance of automated scenery and special effects during performances. They will set up all overhead and deck automation in the show with assistance from their team of local carpenters. This position requires a very detail-oriented person with a strong adherence to safety protocols and practices.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

· Lead and oversee local crews during load in and load out, ensure equipment is safely transported

· During load-in and load-out, reeve all trusses or other overhead automation, plug in winches, and trim trusses as necessary; reeve all deck tracks and tension winches; manage cable to maintain a safe workspace; assist other departments by moving automation as needed

· Operate the automation control consoles in a safe and consistent manner for performances, rehearsals, and maintenance operations

· Inspect and maintain equipment and systems; update maintenance and inspection records as directed

· Complete preventive maintenance and cleaning of automation equipment per manufacturer’s specifications

· Run safety checks by operating all effects in show conditions; maintain a safe working environment by conforming to all established safety policies and procedures

· Understand the Employer’s safety handbook, specifically regarding Fall Arrest and Fall Prevention Protocols

· Operate and troubleshoot automated equipment and systems during performances

· Collaborate with the technical team to ensure smooth transitions and effects.

· Assist in the programming and testing of automation cues

KEY QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

· Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to completing both complex and routine tasks with precision

· Technical theatre experience is valuable; diverse backgrounds in the performing arts are welcomed. National touring experience is a plus.

· Collaborative team player, comfortable working long hours in close quarters with different types of personalities

· Flexible and willing to work an 8-show a week schedule, which may include additional calls outside of regular performances for rehearsals

· Ability to adapt to varying loud sound and flashing lighting environments

· Comfortable working in various spaces that may be dark and cramped; adaptability is key in different environments

· Excellent practical, problem-solving, organizational, planning and time management skills

· Proficiency in computer skills (Mac and PC) is a bonus; a willingness to learn new technologies is encouraged

· Professional attitude and commitment to your work

· Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

· Attention to detail

· Ability to work under pressure and solve problems

· Be a collaborative team player who is self-motivated and can work autonomously

· Friendly, positive attitude

· Able to physically move 75 pounds, be comfortable lifting and walking backwards, and be comfortable walking up and down stairs

· Valid Driver’s License / A valid Driver’s License is preferred but not mandatory

· A valid passport or travel document that allows for international travel

OTHER QUALIFICIATIONS

· Experience with automation systems in a theatrical setting

· Strong technical skills and understanding of stage machinery
