POSITION OVERVIEW

The Head Props is responsible for loading in and out the props package of the show and designating portions of it to their assistant(s). They preset props, teach local stagehands their tracks, and run the deck to ensure scene changes occur smoothly and safely. They will supervise all the touring crew within their department and local crew during performances, load in, and load out.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

· Lead and direct local props crew to assist in loading the show

· Create props documentation for each venue stop on the route

· Become familiar with show specific props gear, the assembly process, and travel methodology

· Load and secure prop elements in touring trailers

· Maintain props inventory, including the repair of broken or damaged props and replacing perishables as needed

· Keep the props work and storage areas clean and in good working order

· Oversee and direct the assistant(s) within the props department

· Rehearse major scenic changes with local crew

· Run all show cues in the performance with local assistance

· Load, unload and distribute equipment for other departments as necessary.

· Unload, build, and place all props and other equipment assigned to the department

· Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with industry standards.

· Works closely with Production Management to advise on staffing, including managing disciplinary action within the department, and making recommendations for open positions within the props department

KEY QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

· Strong leadership skills with a focus on guiding and supporting a diverse crew of varying skill levels.

· Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to completing both complex and routine tasks with precision.

· Technical theatre experience is valuable; diverse backgrounds in the performing arts are welcomed. National touring experience is a plus.

· Collaborative team player, comfortable working long hours in close quarters with different types of personalities.

· Flexible and willing to work an 8-show a week schedule, which may include additional calls outside of regular performances for rehearsals

· Ability to adapt to varying loud sound and flashing lighting environments

· Comfortable working in various spaces that may be dark and cramped; adaptability is key in different environments.

· Excellent practical, problem-solving, organizational, planning and time management skills.

· Proficiency in computer skills (Mac and PC) is a bonus; a willingness to learn new technologies is encouraged.

· Professional attitude and commitment to your work

· Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

· Attention to detail

· Ability to work under pressure and solve problems

· Be a collaborative team player who is self-motivated and can work autonomously

· Friendly, positive attitude

· Able to physically move 75 pounds, be comfortable lifting and walking backwards, and be comfortable walking up and down stairs.

· Valid Driver’s License / A valid Driver’s License is preferred but not mandatory

· A valid passport or travel document that allows for international travel

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

· Experience in carpentry, painting, costuming, and/or related technical theatre work.

· Strong technical skills and understanding of fabrication methods
