Seeking non-AEA actors for a January run of new one-act play at The Tank in NYC.

Girls Online is written and directed by Maggie Dunn and produced by Daisy Theatricals.

Stipend: $50 + percentage of box office profit

Availability details

Rehearsals: Rehearsals will on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons beginning October 27th.

Location: Rehearsals will split between The Bechdel Project, New York City Center Studios, and The Tank.

Tuesday, January 14th at 7:15pm

Thursday, January 16 at 9:45pm

Synopsis
It is the end of summer before 8th grade in some suburban town in some New England state. Elizabeth, wanna-be grunge teenager, and her (only slightly) cooler best friend, Scarlett, drink slurpees, flirt with guys on Omegle, and dream of the year ahead. As pressure both on and offline builds, Elizabeth must decide if she will sink or swim.

Girls Online is a modern coming of age story that explores the complexity of growing up alongside the rise of social media, the high-stakes social dynamics of girlhood, and the early phases of exploring sexuality.

Intimacy Notes

During rehearsal and performance, actors playing ELIZABETH, SCARLETT, and JOHN must be comfortable with extended lip-to-lip contact (kissing). The actors playing ELIZABETH and JOHN must be comfortable portraying staged intimacy that implies hand to genital contact.

Character Breakdowns
Please note actors of all racial and ethnic identities, body types, gender and sexual identities are encouraged to audition.

ELIZABETH (18+ to play 13 years old): A wanna-be-grunge girl who spends her time either online or with her best friend. Awkward, a little goofy, and desperately wants to fit in. Trying to figure out who she will be in eighth grade, while sorting through internet drama, relationships, and mental health challenges.

*Queer actors are highly encouraged to submit for this role.

SCARLETT (18+ to play 13 years old): Elizabeth’s best friend, in the not-popular crowd at school. Takes her style inspiration from grunge Tumblr and Indie Sleeze scene. She siezes any opportunity to be rebellious and prove her good taste in music and pop culture. Quietly deals with insecurity.

*Queer actors are highly encouraged to submit for this role.

JOHN (18+ to play 13 years old): Elizabeth’s love interest. Immature, gross, a typical straight 13 year old boy with misogynistic and homophobic tendencies. Slightly popular at school.

JENNIFER (to play 40s-50s): Elizabeth’s mom. Middle-class woman. Well-intentioned, but doesn’t always know how to handle the many things that her daughter deals with.

JENNA: Internet friend in Elizabeth's twitter group chat. The moderator of the chat and has the most power, which she loves. A little bitchy, but still a Twitter fangirl underneath.

NATALIE: Internet friend in Elizabeth's twitter group chat. Was recently added to the group chat by Tyler. Sometimes stretches the truth for attention. Struggles with her mental health, often posting about her negative coping methods on Twitter.

TYLER: Internet friend in Elizabeth's twitter group chat and the most engrossed in internet fandom culture. Silly, random, naive. Loves Dan and Phil.

AMANDA: Internet friend in Elizabeth’s twitter group chat and the closest friends with Elizabeth. Sweet, a people-pleaser, and lover of rules.

GUY: A creepy man on Omegle who masturbates to minors. Tech savvy. Lives in his mother’s basement.
