DESCRIPTION

Shakespeare on the Sound (SOS) is seeking union and non-union actors for its 29th season’s summer production of MacBeth by William Shakespeare. Directed by Axel Avin Jr. The show is performed in Pinkey Park outdoors under the stars Tuesday-Sundays. Rowayton, CT is located 47 miles north of NYC in southern Fairfield County, Connecticut. Trains to Rowayton depart from Grand Central Terminal and travel time is 1 hour.

Open call auditions will be held Friday, January 31, 2025 from 12-6PM at The Studio for Performing Arts (26 Forest St) in New Canaan, CT. Callbacks, if needed, will be held Friday, February 14 and/or Sunday, February 16, 2025 by appointment.

AUDITION DETAILS

One Shakespeare monologue no longer than 90 seconds. A monologue from Macbeth welcomed but not required, no sonnets please

Please bring a headshot and resume. You will be asked to fill out an information form upon arrival

Audition slots are filled on a first come first-serve basis. All those auditioning will sign in upon arrival no earlier than 11:30am and will be seen in order of sign in. Regardless of union status actors will be seen in order of the sign in sheet.

All roles are available.

A monitor will be present. This is not an Equity Principal Audition.

We are not accepting video submissions at this time.

REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE INFORMATION

First Rehearsal: May 20, 2025

First Performance: June 11, 2025 in Rowayton, CT

Closing Performance: June 29, 2025

Rehearsals will be in NYC

The last week of rehearsal, beginning June 6, will be in CT at Pinkney Park

Generally, rehearsals are Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00am-6:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am-3:00pm.

SOS will provide an affinity/quiet space during rehearsals and throughout the show

COMPENSATION

Non-Union pay $500 per week. A Travel Stipend for transportation via train (Grand Central to Rowayton, CT) is provided once the production moves to CT.

AEA LOA reference to LORT. ($704 in 2024). At this point in time, we are still negotiating our annual letter of agreement with Actors' Equity Association. Compensation will be competitive and include pension and benefits.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Macbeth (AEA)Male 30-40

A formidable fighter and captain in the Scottish army. He has a high moral compass and a deference to the order of law and succession. A devout countryman. His world is inverted, his morality discarded, and his mind warped by his belief in the witches’ prophecy. He is devoted wholeheartedly to his wife. Exceptional language and stage combat skills required.

Lady Macbeth (AEA) Female 30-40

A woman of deathly ambition. The backbone of the Macbeths. A keen opportunist and strategist that plots the murder of Duncan to catapult her husband to the Scottish thrown. Excellent Language skills.

Banquo (AEA) Male 30-40s

A captain alongside Macbeth. Less than Macbeth in both title and prophetic reward. Banquo is jealous, suspicious and guarded. His ghost returns to torment Macbeth. Excellent Language skills.

Macduff/Sargeant (AEA) Male 30-40s

A loyal and brave Scotsman. Willing to leave his wife and children unattended to save his country from tyranny. He makes a fatal error, costing him his family, yet ultimately succeeds in saving his beloved country. Excellent language and stage combat skills.

Witch 1/Murderer 1 Male, Female or Non-Binary and of an indeterminate age

Witch 2/Murderer 2 Male, Female or Non-Binary and of an indeterminate age

Witch 3/ Lady Macduff Female 30s

· The witches are supernatural beings unbound by human laws of physics or morality. Willing to destroy the lives of mortals for their mere entertainment. Spiteful and impulsive. Their gender is as questionable as the source of their lust for chaos. Strong physical acting skills.

· Lady Macduff - A women of high status. A dutiful wife and mother who lives a life of comfort and ease. Unable to comprehend her husband’s sudden disappearance.

· The Murderers - Villainous shadows, desperate to elevate their station in life and are easily persuaded to murder on Macbeth’s behalf.

Duncan/Siward Male 50-60s

King of Scotland. A respected ruler that inspires loyalty amongst his subjects. He acts quickly and decisively to root out betrayal in his ranks.

Malcolm Male 20-30s

King Duncans eldest son. A reluctant heir. He avoids conflict until he steps into his greatness, leading the charge against Macbeth and accepts his birthright.

Lennox Male, Female or Non-Binary 20s

A young thane attending on Duncan. He often reflects the views of the people. Malleable and shifts his allegiance to whom is in power.

Ross Male, Female or Non-Binary 20-30s

A Thane. Serves as a deliverer of important messages. Ross tells King Duncan of Macbeths bravery in battle.

Porter Male, Female or Non-Binary 20s-50s

A drunk. He is weary of his post. Irreverent. Excellent comedic actor.
