DESCRIPTION

The Theatrical Electrician position reports to the Production Manager, Performing Arts/Emerson Stage. This role will oversee all electrics and lighting duties for scenic elements designed and produced for Emerson Stage and the Department of Performing Arts Theatre productions. As needed, the Theatrical Electrician will serve as Head Electrician or Designer on productions. This position will also independently teach electrics and lighting skills to students and supervise and train student designers to ensure successful production outcomes across various events and productions. This position involves close collaboration with Lighting Design faculty, Performing Arts faculty and staff, and the Office of the Arts. This role requires accuracy, attention to detail, and good teaching abilities.

This is a full-time 10-month position that is held from August 1 to May 31 each year.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Instruct and supervise students engaged in co-curricular production work, various class labs, or working as student employees.
  • Instruct and supervise all students assigned as Production Electricians Lead Electrician or Assistant Lead Electrician for the eight productions of the Emerson Stage season working as part of the electrics team to order load hang cable patch program troubleshoot run and strike all electrical elements of a production.
  • Training students on risk management and safety compliance protocols.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to support the lighting design and electrics needs for productions in support of the curriculum and/or productions.
  • Work closely with Office of the Arts staff about uses of in-house equipment rental deliveries/pick-up special rigging schedules and uses of theatre spaces.
  • Work with lighting supervisors in the Office of the Arts to draw up, finalize and approve student electrical schematics for productions.
  • Mentor and supervise pre-production equipment and material shop orders, designs load-in tech dress rehearsals for each production.
  • Serve as the Production Electrician when required or needed due to lack of student availability work closely with assistants assigned to those productions.
  • Remain on call evenings and weekends to ensure their expertise is available to all production crews faced with electrical concerns.
  • Attend weekly production meetings Fridays 9a-1p and weekly area meetings as scheduled.
  • Participate in monthly Design/Tech area meetings first Thursday of the month 2-4p Sept-May representing the Production Electrician area and needs.
  • Responsible for raising issues or concerns with the Production Manager in a timely manner.
  • Maintain tools and equipment.
  • Monitor electric and lighting stock inventory and advise Technical Director when stocks are low.
  • Maintain a running account of materials used per project.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety policies, codes, and regulations, including, but not limited to, hazard communication, hazardous waste management, and Boston fire regulations.
  • Design basic lighting plot and cues for annual BFA Showcase New Fest Short Works and any other productions or events as requested.
  • Work closely with the Technical Director and Scenic team for all theatrical scenic needs involving set electrics.

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to perform the job effectively.

  • Bachelor’s degree in lighting design and/or theater required.
  • Experience managing, instructing and supervising production teams required.
  • 3-5 years of appropriate theatrical lighting work experience required, preferably at an institution of higher learning
  • 2-4 years instructing students in the field or in a classroom setting required.
  • OSHA30 Certification required
  • 2-4 years using, in a professional capacity, ETC Lighting Control Systems, Vectorworks, Lightwright and other software such as the Lighting Paperwork system.
