On June 16, one of five scores from the 2023–2024 Broadway season will win the Tony Award for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre at the 77th Annual Tony Awards.
Vying for that coveted prize are Adam Guettel for Days of Wine and Roses, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim for Here Lies Love, Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine for The Outsiders, Will Butler for Stereophonic, and Shaina Taub for Suffs.

Some background: The score category alternated from Best Original Score (1947) to Best Composer and Lyricist (1949) back to Best Original Score (1950 and 1951), Best Composer (1962), Best Composer and Lyricist (1963-1968). No award was given in 1969 and 1970. When the category returned in 1971, it was again Best Original Score and remained so through 1996, although no award was given in 1989. The category was slightly altered 1997-2000 to Best Original Musical Score. 2001 was Best Original Score, 2002 Best Original Musical Score, and 2003-2007 Best Original Score. In 2008 the category was renamed Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre.
