Industry News Broadway Licensing Adds Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical to Catalog

Adapted from Jeff Kinney's popular children's book series, the musical premiered at Minnesota's Children's Theatre Company in 2016.

Broadway Licensing has added a stage musical adaptation of Jeff Kinney's best-selling children's book series Diary of a Wimpy Kid to its licensing catalogue.

With a book by 2023 Tony nominee Kevin Del Aguila (Some Like It Hot) and a score by Michael Mahler and Alan Schmuckler, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical premiered at Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2016. A revised version played the same company in 2022, and that version is what will be licensed.

The show follows the trials and tribulations of tween middle school student Greg Heffley, the titular "wimpy kid" forced to share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving.

"We are thrilled to add Diary of a Wimpy Kid to our musical catalogue," says Broadway Licensing President Sean Cercone. "The story is relatable, funny, and heartwarming, and we know that schools, community theatre organizations, and children’s theatre groups are eager to bring this global sensation to life on their own stage."

The musical was created in collaboration with 20th Century Studios and by special arrangement with Kevin McCollum and Buena Vista Theatrical—the work also credits the book series' film adaptations as its source material.

“I’m delighted to finally unleash Greg Heffley’s musical diary on the world!," adds Del Aguila. "Middle School is a time of big, overblown, awkward feelings, so what better way to express them than in song? It’s a true family show that makes adults and children laugh and cheer together. Here’s hoping it spreads happiness around like the Cheese Touch."
