Adapted from the 2007 film and featuring a book by Jessie Nelson and a Tony-nominated score by Bareilles, Waitress was developed and premiered by Massachusetts' American Repertory Theater before debuting on Broadway in 2015, picking up four 2016 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. The work made a Broadway return at the Ethel Barrymore following the COVID-19 shutdown beginning September 2, 2021, sticking around through December 20. Bareilles (Into the Woods, Girls5Eva) first played Jenna as a replacement to original star Jessie Mueller; she ended up headlining two more limited engagements throughout the original run and did a stint in London’s West End prior to the shutdown.

The live stage capture of Waitress premiered at Tribeca Film Festival before getting a wide theatrical release in December 2023. It was then made available on demand online.

In the filmed musical, Bareilles stars as Jenna and is joined by Waitress' complete encore run cast, including Christopher Fitzgerald in his Tony-nominated performance as Ogie, Drew Gehling as Dr. Pomatter, Charity Angél Dawson as Becky, Caitlin Houlahan as Dawn, Eric Anderson as Cal, Dakin Matthews as Joe, and Joe Tippett as Earl. The Broadway encore company was rounded out by Tyrone Davis, Jr., Matt DeAngelis, Andrew Fitch, Henry Gottfried, Molly Jobe, Emily Koch, Max Kumangai, Anastacia McCleskey, Gerianne Pérez, Stephanie Torns, and Nyla Watson.

Waitress, produced by Barry and Fran Weissler alongside Norton and Elayne Herrick, features sets by Scott Pask, costumes by Suttirat Anne Larlarb, lighting by Ken Billington, and sound by Jonathan Deans. Nadia DiGiallonardo served as music supervisor with casting by Telsey + Company's Pat Goodwin.

Diane Paulus directed Waitress for the stage, with Brett Sullivan directing the film capture and Nelson serving as creative advisor. Alecia Parker was executive producer of the screen capture, with Michael Roiff, Barry and Fran Weissler, Bareilles, Nelson, and Paul Morphos serving as producers.

PBS' fall season will also include American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos, premiering September 27 at 9 PM ET. This three-part series is the result of Tony-honored actor and playwright John Leguizamo's preparation for his 2017 Broadway show, Latin History for Morons, which produced an obsession with reading and researching the history of the Americas. Leguizamo's frustration over the whitewashing of American history, coupled with his nature as a student of the world, resulted in the Voces series, which follows the actor-playwright as he travels throughout Mexico and the U.S. to shed light on both the known and lesser-known Latino stories.

Following that will be the semi-staged oratorio Émigré, set to premiere on PBS October 25 at 9 PM ET. Featuring the New York Philharmonic and an international cast telling the story of Jewish refugees during World War II, the production is set to music by composer Aaron Zigman with lyrics by Grammy-winning librettist Mark Campbell and additional lyrics by Brock Walsh. Long Yu conducts this New York Philharmonic co-commission with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

Land of Gold, a documentary exploring the making of John Adams and Peter Sellars’ San Francisco Opera premiere, Girls of the Golden West, will make its PBS debut via Great Performances November 1 at 9 PM ET. Amid the backstage hubbub, composer Adams; singers Julia Bullock, Paul Appleby, and J’Nai Bridges; and director Sellars wrestle their bittersweet opera—dramatizing the turbulent history of the California gold rush—onto the stage.

Patsy Cline: Walkin’ After Midnight, another Great Performances title, will premiere November 22 at 9 PM ET. Featuring commentary from Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline’s husband Charlie Dick, and other friends, the concert includes performances by Annie Bosko, Ashley McBryde, Beverly D'Angelo, Crystal Gayle, Grace Potter, Home Free, The Isaacs, Kellie Pickler, Kristin Chenoweth, Mandy Barnett, Mickey Guyton, Natalie Grant, Rita Wilson, Pam Tillis, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Reyna Roberts, Tami Neilson, Tiera Kennedy, Tigirlily Gold, Wynonna, and more.

Michael Bublé, Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, saxophonist Dave Koz, and Henry Mancini’s daughter, Monica Mancini, will pay tribute to the Oscar-winning composer November 29 at 9 PM ET in the Great Performances debut of Henry Mancini 100 at the Hollywood Bowl. Filmed live at the California venue, the evening also includes clips from Mancini-scored films as well as behind-the-scenes documentary footage capturing the recording sessions for The Henry Mancini 100th Sessions—Henry Has Company, a new album featuring Gustavo Dudamel, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Lizzo, Stevie Wonder, Pat Metheny, Take 6, Snarky Puppy, and more.
