That decision doesn’t sit well with the producers of the David Mamet revival, who had hoped Alan Alda would be eligible in the Best Lead Actor in a Play field. The New York Times reports that Glengarry producer Jeffrey Richards plans to appeal the decision. Richards told the paper, “There will be an official appeal, since not everybody who was on the committee had seen the play.”
Alan Alda plays Shelly Levene in Glengarry Glen Ross, which is currently running at the Royale Theatre, located at 242 West 45th Street. The company also features Jeffrey Tambor and Liev Schreiber with Gordon Clapp, Frederick Weller, Tom Wopat and Jordan Lage. Joe Mantello directs.
The Tony committee will again assemble May 9 to determine the nominees for the 59th Annual Tony Awards. On May 10, Alan Cumming, Lynn Redgrave, Kate Burton and Brian Stokes Mitchell will read the list of Tony nominees at 8:30 AM at the Marriott Marquis Hotel.
The Antoinette Perry "Tony" Award is bestowed annually for distinguished achievement. The 2005 Tony Awards will once again be held at Radio City Music Hall and will be broadcast by CBS from 8 to 11 PM. Sunday, June 5 is the date. Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman will return as host.
