Broadway favorite Laura Benanti has spoken out against former She Loves Me co-star Zachary Levi, who theorized that the untimely death of beloved Broadway star Gavin Creel was caused by a COVID-19 vaccine during a bizarre Instagram Live rant October 20. Levi, Creel, and Benanti all shared the stage in the 2016 Broadway revival of She Loves Me.
Benanti set the record straight in a recent podcast appearance on That's a Gay Ass Podcast. "I never liked him," she said of Levi, while speaking to podcast host Eric Williams. "Everyone was like, 'He's so great,' and I was like, 'No, he's not. He's sucking up all the fucking energy in this room, he wants to mansplain everybody's part to them.' He really sucked everybody in with his dance party energy. He was like, 'We're doing a dance party at half hour.' I was like, 'Good luck. Have fun.'"
This isn't the first time Levi has come under fire for similar comments—the actor made headlines in recent months for his public anti-vaccine stance, and often takes to Instagram to campaign for President-elect Donald Trump and condemn the liberalism of the entertainment industry.
"To use [Creel's] memory for his political agenda, and to watch him try to make himself cry until he had one single tear which he did not wipe away, I was like, 'Fuck you forever,'" Benanti continued. The full podcast episode is available to view here.
A beloved fixture of the Broadway community, Creel passed away September 30 at the age of 48 after battling a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma. Read Creel's obituary here.
