The West End return of the Olivier-nominated Sister Act The Musical, which played a limited engagement at London's Dominion
Theatre last spring, has released a live cast recording that is now available on all streaming platforms.
The cast album was recorded over three performances at the Dominion, May 27–29. The recording marks the first English-language recording of the revised and now licensed version of the musical.
The recording features the recent company, which was led by Olivier winner Beverley Knight, who reprised her work as Deloris Van Cartier after playing the part in London in summer 2022 plus Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones in her West End debut as Mother Superior; Lesley Joseph returning to the role of Sister Mary Lazarus; Brit Award-winning singer Lemar as Curtis Jackson; Olivier winner Clive Rowe returning to his Olivier-nominated role as Eddie Souther; West End favorite Lizzie Bea returning as Sister Mary Robert; Olivier nominee Alison Jiear as Sister Mary Patrick; and Regent Park’s La Cage aux Folles star Carl Mullaney as Monsignor O’Hara.
The ensemble includes Caroline Bateson, Natalia Brown, Damian Buhagiar, Tricia Deighton, Lori Haley Fox, Lauren Hall, Chloe Hopcroft, Tom Hopcroft, Bradley Judge, Claudia Kariuki, Graham MacDuff, Castell Parker, Emma Ralston, Anne Smith, Michael Ward, and Jermaine Woods.
Composer Menken said in a statement, “I am so proud and excited to have this new cast album of Sister Act that so thrillingly captures the power and emotion of this new production. To quote Glenn Slater’s brilliant lyrics, this album ‘takes me to heaven’!”
Bill Buckhurst directed the return engagement with choreography by Alistair David, set and costume design by Morgan Large, musical direction by Neil MacDonald, lighting design by Tim Mitchell, sound design by Tom Marshall, musical supervision by Stephen Brooker, and casting by Stuart Burt.
Based on the film of the same name, Sister Act features music by Tony and Oscar winner Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, a book by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane.
The musical played Broadway's Broadway Theatre March 24, 2011-August 26, 2012, officially opening April 20, 2011. The New York production earned five Tony nominations, including Best Musical.
The musical tells the story of a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Under protective custody, she is hidden in the one place she won’t be found: a convent.
