Producers Fox Theatricals and Barbara Whitman announced that the national tour of the 2015 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Fun Home, has recouped its tour production costs. The production opened in October 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio.
“We’re so proud Fun Home has resonated with audience members throughout the country,” producers Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, and Whitman said in a joint statement. “We hope that the success of the Fun Home national tour will inspire others to produce groundbreaking, challenging and exciting new works of musical theater not only on Broadway, but also on the road.”
Based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic-novel memoir, Fun Home has book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and music by Jeanine Tesori. Sam Gold directs.
The unconventional show made history, becoming the first Broadway musical written by an all-felame team to win the Best Musical Tony, and the first Tony-winning musical to have a lesbian as its main character. Tesori and Kron also won the Tony Award for Best Original Score. It won five Tony Awards in all, including Best Book (Kron) and Best Direction (Gold).
It ended a successful Broadway run September 10, 2016, at Circle in the Square after 26 previews and 582 regular performances. It opened on Broadway April 19, 2015, after a sold-out Off-Broadway run at the Public Theater in 2013.
The in-the-round Broadway staging has been re-conceived to play proscenium theatres across the U.S.
The touring cast includes Robert Petkoff as Bruce, Susan Moniz as Helen, and Kate Shindle as Alison, with Abby Corrigan, Carly Gold, Kally Duling, Robert Hager, Henry Boshart, Luké Barbato Smith, Anthony Fortino, Noelle Hogan, Caroline Murrah, Amanda Naughton, Jadyn Schwartz and Michael Winther.
