Look out, New York! The team behind The Play That Goes Wrong is bringing more chaos to Broadway—and this time, there's flying. Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Mischief Theatre's follow-up to 2012's The Play That Goes Wrong, will play a limited 16-and-a-half–week engagement at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre beginning March 17. Opening night is set for April 19.
Co-written by Play That Goes Wrong writers and Mischief company members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, Peter Pan Goes Wrong sees the Cornley Drama Society back to present another play‚ J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, with yet more technical misfires. The work comes to Broadway with its original cast intact, including Lewis, Sayer, Shields, Chris Leask, Ellie Morris, Charlie Russell, Jonathan Sayer, Greg Tannahill, and Nancy Zamit; all but Leask and Morris previously starred in the original company of The Play That Goes Wrong in London's West End and on Broadway.
The production will also reunite the work's original creative team, led by director Adam Meggido and including scenic designer Simon Scullion, costume designer Roberto Surace, lighting designer Matt Haskins, sound designer Ella Wahlström, and co-composers Richard Baker and Rob Falconer. The Broadway bow is being produced by Kevin McCollum, Kenny Wax, Stage Presence, and Catherine Schreiber.
Mischief's The Play That Goes Wrong, the first entry in the Goes Wrong series, sees the Cornley Players tackle (or attempt to) a 1920s murder mystery, The Murder at Haversham Manor. The work premiered at London's Old Red Lion Theatre in 2012, ultimately transferring to London's West End in 2014 where it has remained ever since. The work came to Broadway in 2017, earning a Tony Award for scenic designer Nigel Hook, and moved to Off-Broadway's New World Stages, where its run continues, in 2019. The play also toured the U.S. in 2018 and 2019, and played a sit-down run in Chicago in 2021.
The slapstick comedy has since become somewhat of a franchise. Peter Pan Goes Wrong was the first follow-up, making its world premiere at London's Pleasance Theatre in 2013 and its West End debut in 2015 following a U.K. tour. The play was adapted as a TV special for BBC One in 2016, and made its North American premiere in 2022 at Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Canada.
Since Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Mischief has mostly relegated its Goes Wrong entries to the small screen. A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong aired on BBC One in 2017, followed by an 11-part series The Goes Wrong Show that aired in 2019 and 2021. A 2020 Christmas special, also on the BBC, saw the Cornley Dramatic Society stage the Nativity.
