Inspired by the 15-time Grammy winner's life, the story centers on 17-year-old Ali and her mother, sharing a cramped apartment near Times Square. Ali wants to live out her NYC dream, but Mom is scared her daughter will repeat her own mistakes. Along the way, a wise piano teacher opens Ali's eyes to the power of music, and the legacy of her artistic birthright.
Water for Elephants officially opened March 21 at the Imperial Theatre. Based on Sara Gruen's acclaimed novel, the high flying musical features a book by Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatcher) and music and lyrics by PigPen Theatre Co. (The Tale of Despereaux). Tony nominee Jessica Stone (Kimberly Akimbo) directs.
The work tells the story of a man who runs away from his life, only to find himself caught up in a traveling circus and an increasingly tangled web of love and lies. Seen through the eyes of his older self, his adventure becomes a poignant reminder that if you choose the ride, life can truly begin again at any age.
