Daniel K. Isaac’s Once Upon a (Korean) Time began previews August 23 at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre Off-Broadway and will open August 31. Performances of the show, presented by Ma-Yi Theater Company, are scheduled to run through September 18. See photos from the world premiere production below.
Starring in the world premiere are Sonnie Brown, Sasha Diamond, David Lee Huynh, Teresa Avia Lim, Jon Norman Schneider, David Shih, and Jillian Sun. Daniel K. Isaac and Sami Ma serve as understudies.
Isaac’s playwriting debut interweaves traditional Korean fables with the horrors of the Korean War in a theatrical analog for the experiences of the Korean American diaspora. Covering swathes of time, the new work traces inherited trauma through the generations, and the methods used to manage it.
Obie-winner Ralph B. Peña directs the production, helming the creative team which features scenic designer Se Oh, costume designer Phuong Nguyen, lighting designer Oliver Wason, projection designer Yee Eun Nam, sound designer Fabian Obispo, and props designer Alexander Wylie. Alyssa K. Howard serves as production stage manager.
The play comes on the heels of a broader cultural conversation about Dahl's work and the prejudice that was embedded in many of his most beloved stories.
