An immersive, in-the-round production of the landmark 1967 rock musical Hair is set to bow September 22 at the Dallas Theater Center starring Smash actor Jaime Cepero as Claude.
Cepero swiftly became a fan favorite for his portrayal of love-to-hate character Ellis, the ambitious assistant with an All About Eve ruthless streak, on the NBC musical series. He’ll star as Claude in DTC’s staging of Hair, which is helmed by artistic director Kevin Moriarty. Performances run September 22–October 22 in the Wyly Theatre. Hair officially opens September 28.
In addition to Cepero, Hair’s leading trio also features Ace Anderson as Hud and Tiana Kaye Johnson as Sheila. They are joined by Monique Abry as Crissy, Kia Nicole Boyer as Jeanie, Ayanna Edwards as Dionne, Chris Peluso as Berger, Christopher Llewyn Ramirez as Woof, as well as tribe members Kevin Curtis, Joey Donoian, Kelsey Leigh Ervi, Kyle Igneczi, Valton Jackson, Quintin Jones Jr., Laura Lites, Taylor Nash, Mayte Natalio, and Gabrielle Reyes.
Hair has music by Galt MacDermot, with book and lyrics by James Rado and the late Gerome Ragni. The landmark musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1967 at the Public Theater prior to transferring uptown to Broadway in April 1968. Its score introduced the era-defining anthems “Age of Aquarius” and “Let the Sunshine In,” as well as “Easy to Be Hard,” “Frank Mills,” among others.
Jo Winiarski designs the DTC set for Hair, which will place the audience and actors in a shared space for a communal musical “happening.” The production will have choreography by Ann Yee, music direction/supervision by Vonda K. Bowling, costume design by Karen Perry, sound design by Broken Chord, lighting design by Seth Reiser, and wig design by J. Jared Janas and Dave Bova.
