Video Watch Lillias White, Anaïs Mitchell, and Cast of Broadway's Hadestown Celebrate 1,000th Performance

At curtain call on March 19, the cast and its composer sang a song of spring together.

The Tony-winning musical Hadestown celebrated playing 1,000 performances at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre (and the forthcoming arrival of spring) March 19 with a surprise appearance by songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin.

After a heartfelt thank you, Mitchell and Tony winner Lillias White, who now stars as Hermes, led the audience in a performance of the classic springtime anthem, "I Can See Clearly Now." As the audience subsequently departed the theatre, the cast took to the Kerr’s fire escape and threw flowers to fans. Watch the celebration in the video above.

In addition to White, Hadestown also stars Jewelle Blackman as Persephone, Grammy winner Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Tony nominee Tom Hewitt as Hades, and two-time Tony nominee Eva Noblezada as Eurydice.

They are joined by Amelia Cormack, Shea Renne, and Soara-Joye Ross as the Fates. The chorus of Workers is played by Emily Afton, Malcolm Armwood, Alex Puette, Trent Saunders, and Grace Yoo. The cast includes swings Sojourner Brown, Brandon Cameron, Max Kumangai, and Yael “YaYa” Reich, plus Allysa Shorte and Tanner Ray Wilson.

Hadestown premiered in 2016 at New York Theatre Workshop, playing productions in Canada and London before coming to Broadway in April 2019. Following two intertwining love stories—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back.

The show, featuring a book and score by Anaïs Mitchell, won eight 2019 Tony Awards: Best Director of a Musical (Rachel Chavkin), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (André De Shields), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Bradley King), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Rachel Hauck), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Jessica Paz and Nevin Steinberg), Best Orchestrations (Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose), Best Original Score (Mitchell), and Best Musical.
