Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America, which received its British premiere at the National in 1992 (for Part One: Millennium Approaches) and 1993 (for Part Two: Perestroika), has returned to that same London theatre in a revival directed by Marianne Elliott.

The production officially opened May 4 in the National’s Lyttelton Theatre, with a cast headed by Andrew Garfield, Nathan Lane, James McArdle, Russell Tovey, and Denise Gough.

Completing the cast are Stuart Angell, Susan Brown, Laura Caldow, Claire Lambert, Amanda Lawrence, Becky Namgauds, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Stan West, and Lewis Wilkins.

Tony Kushner’s two-part epic historical drama captures the lives of the HIV-positive Prior; Louis, his lover who abandons him; Joe, a closeted gay Mormon, his Valium-addicted wife Harper, and Hannah, his mother from Utah; Roy Cohn, a notorious lawyer from the McCarthy hearings who is dying of AIDS, and Belize, his nurse. Through a period of death and tumultuous change, these characters discover, confront, and seduce each other, and are joined by the Angel, a terrifying and beautiful herald of the apocalypse.
