Industry News Amanda Seyfried Heads Cast of Thelma & Louise Musical Workshop

Evan Rachel Wood is reportedly in talks to join Golden Globe winner Seyfried in the musical adaptation of the 1991 film.

A workshop of a musical version of Thelma & Louise, which has been in development since at least 2021, features Amanda Seyfried, according to Variety.

Seyfried won a Golden Globe earlier this week for her performance in Hulu's The Dropout, but was not in attendance due to her participation in the workshop. The actor referenced the new musical in an Instagram video celebrating her Golden Globe win, explaining that she was unable to pick up her trophy because she is involved in "something that is magical, and it's musical."

Seyfried previously starred in the film musicals Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and originated the role of Karen in the Mean Girls filmwhich was later adapted into a Broadway musical. She made her Off-Broadway debut in 2015 as Beth in the world premiere of The Way We Get By at Second Stage.

Callie Khouri, who wrote the screenplay for the 1991 Thelma & Louise film, is attached to the musical alongside indie singer-songwriter Neko Case and Haley Feiffer (Dear Edward), who will compose the score and write the book, respectively. Previous reporting also named theatre director Trip Cullman (Six Degrees of Separation) as part of the team.

Variety also reports that talks indicate Evan Rachel Wood has signed on to the musical adaptation of the film. Wood previously sang in the film musical Across the Universe and Frozen 2.

The 1991 film starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon and earned six Oscar nominations. Khouri took home the Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
