Video American Buffalo Tony Nominee Sam Rockwell Talks Audience Disruptions on Late Night With Seth Meyers

Rockwell co-stars in the Tony-nominated revival at Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre.

Sam Rockwell appeared on the May 10 broadcast of Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about starring in the current Broadway revival of American Buffalo opposite Laurence Fishburne and Darren Criss. He told stories about the cast, the New York acting scene, and audience members taking out their cell phones during the show—a current hot topic on the Main Stem.

The production was nominated for four 2022 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play, Best Direction of a Play for Neil Pepe, Best Scenic Design of a Play for Scott Pask, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Rockwell. See the full list of nominations here.

Rockwell told the talk show host that he found out about his nomination when he woke up and had "a bunch of texts." The performer continued to compliment his costars and say he's "very lucky" to be working alongside them.

The Academy Award winner also told a story about Fishburne calling out an audience member who pulled out their cell phone during the show. "A women went like this [mimes holding a cell phone], and I thought he [Fishburne] was going up on his line and I started saying my line and he wasn't responding. I saw him looking out at the house and then he went, 'don't do that again.'" Watch the full video above.

The American Buffalo revival stars Fishburne as Donny and Criss as Bobby. It features set design by Scott Pask, costume design by Dede Ayite, and lighting design by Tyler Micoleau. The show opened April 14 at Circle in the Square Theatre for a limited 16-week engagement set to conclude July 10.
