Regional News Berkeley Rep Announces Michael Mayer-Led Galileo Musical, POTUS, and More For 2023-2024 Season

The upcoming season will also include two West Coast premieres and a world premiere production.

The 2023-2024 season at Berkeley Rep has been announced, with several West Coast debut productions, plus a world premiere musical directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer. The season will consist of seven productions in total, beginning with Obie Award-winning writer David Cale’s Harry Clarke in September 2023. 

Perfectly timed for the presidential primaries in the fall, Selina Fillinger’s bold feminist comedy POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying To Keep Him Alive will make its West Coast premiere at Berkeley Rep in October 2023, a little over a year after its hit Broadway run.

In November 2023, Berkeley Rep will present Eisa Davis’ lyrical coming-of-age story Bulrusher with Nicole A. Watson at the helmKicking off the new year in January 2024 will be Leslye Headland’s comedy about Christian family dynamics Cult of Love, directed by Tripp Cullman.

In the spring, Eric Ting will direct Lloyd Suh’s story of immigration in the wake of the Chinese Exclusion Act The Far Country, opening in March 2024. It will be followed by the world premiere of the new musical Galileo, led by Michael Mayer, with choreography by David Neumann. With a book by Danny Strong and music and lyrics by Michael Weiner and Zoe Sarnak, it follows a scientist challenging humanity’s understanding of its place in the universe.

Closing out the season will be Mother Road, Octavio Solis’ 21 Century take on The Grapes of Wrath. Berkeley Rep’s Associate Artistic Director David Mendizábal will direct the production, opening in June 2024.
