A downpour of rain may have shortened this year's Broadway Barks—the annual dog and cat adoption event co-founded by Bernadette Peters and the late Mary Tyler Moore—but Broadway favorite Peters hopes fellow animal lovers will check out the websites of the many shelters and rescue groups that were part of this year's event in Shubert Alley.
Three-time Tony honoree Peters, who will return to Broadway later this season in Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends, says, "After everyone’s months of hard work, we were disappointed that the rain cut our annual pet adoptathon short, but the animals have always been our focus, and we would be so grateful if anyone who is looking for a pet would check out these wonderful shelters that were a part of Broadway Barks!"
This year's participating New York City-area animal rescue groups included 1 Love 4 Animals, Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniels, Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Animal Care Centers of NYC, Anjellicle Cats Rescue, Best Friends Animal Society, Bideawee, Bobbi and the Strays, City Critters, Francis’s Friends, Hearts & Bones Rescue, Husky House, Linda’s Cat Assistance, Little Shelter, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, Muddy Paws Rescue, North Shore Animal League, Pet ResQ Inc., Save Kitty Foundation, Second Chance Rescue, SPCA of Westchester, and Urban Cat League.
Two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster, back on Broadway in the revival of Once Upon a Mattress, co-hosted the August 3 event, produced by Broadway Cares.
Since its inception in 1998, approximately 85% of the more than 2,000 cats and dogs showcased in Broadway Barks have found forever homes.
