Every year, Playbill conducts an annual report on the top 10 colleges represented on Broadway through their alumni performers, we call it the School of the Stars. That feature is so popular that because of wide-spread demand, we've now created a separate report on creative team credits. The surprising thing is: the top results actually do vary. Still, one college stands at the top this year.
Both with our regular Big 10 report and this new, extended report on creative teams, New York University reigned as the most represented college in the 2022—23 Broadway season, with 57 alumni creatives credited on Broadway shows.
However, while the second and third most-represented colleges on our performer's list were University of Michigan and American Musical and Dramatic Academy, respectively; the second and third most represented in creative teams was Yale University, with 47 alumni working on Broadway shows, and Columbia University, with 17 alumni designers.
Still, wherever you choose to study, anyone can find their way to Broadway, whether from near or far. The majority of our data was comprised of people who attended colleges from all over the country and world: colleges like Victoria University of Wellington in Australia (A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical's Anthony McCarten), University of the Philippines Diliman (KPOP's Clint Ramos), or University of Glasgow in Scotland (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child's John Tiffany). Take a look and see if your school—or a school you're considering attending—made the list!
Editor's Note: For the purposes of this list, we looked at every creative team member who was credited on a Broadway show from May 5, 2022, through April 27, 2023, which runs from the deadline for Tony Awards eligibility for last season to the same for this season. This team members included directors, designers, choreographers, music directors, book writers, composers, lyricists, playwrights, and stage managers. Alumni working in shows that opened on or after April 27, 2023, will be included in next year's list. College attendance data was pulled from publicly available sources, including Playbill, internet-accessible résumés, and professional networking websites. The ranking below is based only on our count of alumni that performed on Broadway during the above range of dates.
