The X Factor semi-finalist Brenda Edwards, who has appeared in the West End productions of We Will Rock You and Chicago, will head the cast of a new production of the musical Sister Act. The reworked version will open April 21, 2020, at the Curve, Leicester.

Edwards will star as Deloris Van Cartier; the character, originated on screen by Whoopi Goldberg (who produces the new version with Jamie Wilson), will be retooled to be portrayed as an older woman instead of as a 23-year-old.

The production will also play the Leeds Grand Theatre, the Newcastle Theatre Royal, the Sheffield Lyceum, and the Manchester Opera House with additional U.K. dates, including a London engagement, to be announced at a later time.

Goldberg, who also produced the original London and Broadway productions, said, “Deloris is a big fun character with lots of personality. Brenda auditioned for this show when it first happened in the U.K. and didn’t get the part because she was too old, so we’ve rectified that. There are different stakes when you’re older. You can be much more irreverent when you’re older than you can be when you’re in your twenties and thirties. Time makes you funnier! I really am so thrilled Sister Act is coming back to the U.K. in 2020 with this new version.”

Sister Act, which played the West End in 2009 before a 2011 Broadway bow, features original music by Tony and Oscar winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, a book by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane.
