The Fabulous Invalid enjoyed fabulous health and wealth last week. Boosted by premium ticket prices, a crowd of tourists, a favorable calendar, some extra scheduled performances, and relatively good weather, Broadway broke box-office records up and down Times Square for the week ending January 1.
The 33 Broadway shows took in $49,710,190—the highest total in Broadway history—with 359,495 people filling 96.42 percent of the available seats, according to figures supplied by The Broadway League. That total was up considerably from last year’s week between Christmas and New Year’s, which saw a $43,065,466 total.
The average paid admission for the week was $138.28, up from last year's $120.39.

The Broadway musical Hamilton set an all-time Broadway record for a single week's box-office take, topping its own $3.3 million record from Thanksgiving Week 2016 with a new high of $3.335 million. Also topping $3 million for the week was Wicked, which earned $3.163 million over nine performances, and the 19-year-old The Lion King, which took in $3.098 million during nine performances.
