Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: Lea Michele's Return Sends Funny Girl Revival to Best Week of Entire Run

Also: audiences are flocking to see The Phantom of the Opera before its historic run comes to a close.

Funny Girl had audiences saying "hello (again), gorgeous!" to star Lea Michele this week, with the Glee alum's return to the revival following a bout of COVID sending the production to the highest-grossing week of its entire run. The show brought in $1.64 million at the August Wilson Theatre box office, becoming the fifth highest-grossing show of the week, behind The Music ManHamiltonMJ The Musical, and The Lion King.

Also continuing to see a marked increase in filled seats and box office receipts is Broadway's longest-running show, The Phantom of the Opera, which recently announced a February, 2023 closing performance at the Majestic Theatre. With fans no doubt rushing to see the show one last time while they still can, the production brought in $1.2 million last week—up from $964 thousand the week of the 18th and $867 thousand the week prior—and filled 100.62% of its seats, meaning it was standing room only at the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Though hardly the first time the juggernaut has sold out, this is the first week it has exceeded 100% capacity since 2017.

Cumulatively, Broadway brought in $26.37 million, up from last week's $25 million, and continued to see excellent attendance, with 92.55% of seats filled across all 24 currently running shows.
