Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: The Music Man Leads the Parade With a $3 Million Week

Receipts fell overall following a Thanksgiving week-high, even as The Phantom of the Opera continues to play to sold-out houses.

Grosses dipped just under 10% last week, but that was to be expected after Broadway enjoyed its best-performing week in months the week of Thanksgiving. With 35 shows currently running (including two, Between Riverside and Crazy and The Collaboration, that began previews last week), receipts came in at $33.89 million, with 82.95% of seats filled, cumulatively.

Despite the post-Thanksgiving drop, The Music Man cleared $3 million again, for the first time since October. The Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster-led revival handily took the top spot of the week, where it has remained consistently for the bulk of its run at the Winter Garden. Other winners included usual suspects The Lion KingHamiltonThe Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked.

Phantom may prove interesting to watch now that the long-running musical has postponed its final Broadway bow after a box-office surge. Though the extension was announced last Tuesday (the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is now sticking around through April), audiences seemed undeterred; the Tony winner was Broadway's sole sell-out last week, playing to 101.09%-filled houses over its eight performances.

Amongst newer faces on the boards, & Juliet is proving popular with audiences; the '90s pop jukebox musical joined the $1 Million Club for the first time the week of Thanksgiving and stayed there last week, bringing in $1.03 million. The show opened November 17 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre after premiering in London's West End.
