Broadway News Tony-Nominated Broadway Revival of For Colored Girls... Completes Run June 5

The Camille A. Brown-helmed production finishes its run at the Booth Theatre following a grassroots campaign to keep it open.

The Broadway revival of for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf by Ntozake Shange completes its run at the Booth Theatre June 5. The show was originally set to close August 14, but moved up its closing date. Previews for the show began April 1, followed by opening April 20.

A grassroots campaign, spearheaded by Ayanna Prescod on Twitter, helped support the show in its final weeks. Read reviews for the production here.

Starring in the revival are Amara Granderson as Lady in Orange, Tendayi Kuumba as Lady in Brown, Rachel Christopher as Lady in Red, Okwui Okpokwasili as Lady in Green, Stacey Sargeant as Lady in Blue, Alexandria Wailes as Lady in Purple, and D. Woods as Lady in Yellow. 

Christopher joined the production in her Broadway debut May 24 as original star Kenita R. Miller went on maternity leave, having earned a Tony nomination for her performance. In addition to Miller's nod, the show has received a further six nominations, including Best Revival of a Play, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. Camille A. Brown has earned nominations for Best Direction of a Play in her directorial debut, and another for Best Choreography.

The creative team also features set designer Myung Hee Cho, projection designer Aaron Rhyne, hair designer Cookie Jordan, music director Deah Love Harriott, music coordinator Tia Allen, associate director Christina Franklin, and associate choreographer Maleek Washington. The production showcases original music by Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby. Bernita Robinson serves as production stage manager and lark hacksaw as assistant stage manager. Erica Jensen of Calleri Jensen Davis cast the production, and Hudson Theatricals provides production supervision.

Ntozake Shange's choreopoem explores the stories of Black women and how they find strength in each other’s humor and passion through a fusion of poetry, dance, music, and song. for colored girls... originally made its Broadway premiere at the Booth Theatre in 1976, and received a Tony nomination for Best Play.
