The Broadway revival of David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly will play its final performance January 14, 2018. At the time of closing, the production, directed by Julie Taymor and starring Clive Owen, will have played 19 previews and 93 regular performances at the Cort Theatre. The production officially opened October 26.
The Tony-winning play marked Owen’s return to Broadway; the Oscar nominee plays Rene Gallimard, who falls for a mysterious Beijing opera sing named Song Liling. Taking on the role of his lover is Jin Ha, who recently appeared in the Chicago company of Hamilton.
Song’s true nature, including gender identity and allegiance, is revealed over the course of the two’s decades-long relationship. The new staging incorporates elements inspired by the real-life affair that served as the initial springboard for the piece.
