Boston Lyric Opera’s 80th anniversary production of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Carousel will play the Emerson Colonial Theatre April 4-13. The production will see the musical returning to the venue where it premiered pre-Broadway in 1945.
Directed by BLO Artistic Associate Anne Bogart, the cast will be led by Brandie Sutton as Julie Jordan, Edward Nelson as Billy Bigelow, Jamie Barton as Nettie Fowler, Anya Matanovič as Carrie Pipperidge, Omar Najmi as Enoch Snow, and Markel Reed as Jigger Craigin.
The company will also include Sarah Heltzel, Theophile Victoria, Tyler Dobies, Devon Russo, Fred C. VanNess Jr., Alexander Davis, Sabrina Lobner, Angela Yam, Abigail Curran, and John Robert Sasso with Boston Foundation President M. Lee Pelton making a cameo as The Starkeeper/Dr. Seldon.
The creative team also includes choreographer Shura Baryshnikov, whose new choreography aims to honor the movement by the late Agnes de Mille; set designer Sara Brown; costume designer Haydee Zelideth; lighting designer Brian H. Scott; and wig and makeup designer Earon Chew Nealey.
David Angus will conduct the 40-piece Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra in performances that feature unamplified singing. BLO Head of Music and Chorus Director Brett Hodgdon will lead the 38-member Boston Lyric Opera chorus.
Carousel, featuring music by Rodgers and a book and lyrics by Hammerstein II, tells the story of millworker Julie Jordan, carousel barker Billy Bigelow, and their ultimately destructive relationship. The classic score includes such numbers as “If I Loved You,” “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
The musical opened at Boston’s Colonial Theatre March 27, 1945, following an early tryout in New Haven, Connecticut. Starring John Raitt and Jan Clayton as Billy and Julie, it played Boston for a three-week, pre-Broadway run through April 15.
Carousel subsequently opened on Broadway April 19, 1945, at the Majestic, playing 890 performances through May 24, 1947.
