From a gingerbread house to under the sea, the classic arts scene in New York covers a lot of ground. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
On Site Opera’s 2024 Opera in the Garden series concludes July 10 at the West Side Community Garden with Opera Fairy Tales. Sopranos Teresa Castilo, Shaina Martinez, Sara Beth Pearson, and mezzo-soprano Devony Smith will celebrate operas inspired by fairy tales with excerpts from Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Dvorak’s Rusalka, and two Cinderellas: Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Massenet’s Cendrillon.
American Ballet Theatre’s summer season continues this week with Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, running July 9-13 at the Metropolitan Opera House. Based on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy of star-crossed lovers, ABT’s production of the ballet is choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, and features scenic and costume design by Nicholas Georgiadis, as well as lighting design by Thomas R. Skelton. Prokofiev’s ballet is a staple of both ballet and concert repertoire, with the famous “Dance of the Knights” being heard often in film and television.
July 10-14 is India Week at Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City! Venues all across Lincoln Center will host a variety of free and choose-what-you-pay events celebrating India’s music, dance, film, art, cuisine and more. The week includes dance performances by the Ragamala Dance Company and the Aakash Odedra Company, silent discos curated by DJ Rekha, and comedy nights featuring Aasif Mandvi, Hari Kondabolu, and more.
The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Summer Evenings series begins July 9 with a concert at Alice Tully Hall featuring violinists Chad Hoops and Kristin Lee, violists Matthew Lipman and Paul Neubauer, and cellist David Finckel. The quintet will play assorted chamber works by Brahms, Dvořák, Mozart, and Puccini. The second Summer Evenings concert, July 13, will feature pianist Anna Geniushene and the Escher String Quartet, playing works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Mozart.
Smuin Contemporary Ballet returns to The Joyce Theatre July 9-14 with a triple bill of original commissions each making their New York premiere. The three works are Val Caniparoli’s Tutto Eccetto il Lavandino, set to music by Vivaldi; Amy Seiwert’s Renaissance, set to music by the Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble; and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Tupelo Tornado, featuring Brandon Alexander as Elvis Presley in a work that is inspired by the iconic musician’s life.
Dancers from the Limón Dance Company will give a free modern dance class the morning of Saturday July 13 on the lawn of Bryant Park. The class is open to all ages and experience levels.
