Off-Broadway News Colette Robert's The Cotillion Opens Off-Broadway May 7

The work following a Black debutante ball in real time features a company and creative team comprising solely Black women.

New Georges and The Movement Theatre Company present the world premiere of Colette Robert's new play The Harriet Holland Social Club Presents the 84th Annual Star-burst Cotillion in the Grand Ballroom of the Renaissance Hotel Off-Broadway at the Mezzanine Theater at A.R.T./New York, officially opening May 7. Performances began May 3 and will continue through May 27.

The work explores Black debutante ball culture and the contradictions hiding beneath its respectability politics, with the action playing out in real time.

The cast includes Caturah Brown, Kayla Coleman, Cherrye J. Davis, Claire Fort, Starr Kirkland, Aigner Mizzelle, Cristina Pitter, Monique St. Cyr, Portland Thomas, Montria Walker, Akyiaa Wilson, and Jehan O. Young.

Robert helms the premiere production of her work, which also features music and lyrics by Dionne McClain-Freeney and additional lyrics by Robert. The all-Black, all-woman creative team also features choreographer nicHi douglas, scenic designer Teresa L. Williams, costume designer Mika Eubanks, lighting designer Stacey Derosier, sound designer Sadah Espii Proctor, and hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis. Gracie Carleton is production stage manager, and Keyana Hemphill is assistant stage manager.
