Like Hairspray, to which it was compared at the time, Cry-Baby is based on a movie of the same name by John Waters. Cry-Baby features a score by David Javerbaum (Act of God) and Adam Schlesinger (the rock band Fountains of Wayne). It has a book by Mark O’Donnell (Hairspray) and Thomas Meehan (Annie). Despite its short run, the show was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The stage show features favorite characters like Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Grover performing well-known songs from the TV show plus new ones by Tom Kitt, Helen Park, and Nate Edmondson.
The prolific costume designer walks through his career, from his beginnings on Project Runway to how he didn't know much about Sweeney Todd before he signed on.
