Summer in New York is a great time to catch free, open-air performances—weather permitting! Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.

Ballet Hispánico will come to Central Park’s SummerStage August 7 for a free performance featuring new and classic Ballet Hispánico repertory including Pas de O’Farrill and Club Havana by Pedro Ruiz, and Sombrerísimo and House of Mad’moiselle by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. The event will also include a meet-and-greet with dancers from the company.

Bryant Park will hold its first-ever Family Day August 10, kicking off with an all-ages modern dance class with dancers from the Limón Dance Company. The day will conclude with a Picnic Performance by dance companies Ephrat Asherie Dance and Barkin/Selissen Project, curated by New Victory Theater, as part of their summer series New Victory Dance.

Jonathon Heyward will lead the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center in two concerts, closing out the orchestra’s summer season. August 6 and 7, Heyward will conduct a program including Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto with soloist Ryan Roberts, Marianna Martines’ Symphony in C Major, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4. August 9 and 10, the orchestra will perform Webern’s orchestral arrangement of Bach’s “Ricercar a 6,” the world premiere of Hannah Kendall’s He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing, Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in A Major with soloist Conrad Tao, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2.

World Orchestra Week continues through August 7 at Carnegie Hall, showcasing youth ensembles from around the world. The final days of the festival will include the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, the European Union Youth Orchestra with guest musicians from the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, and the Afghan Youth Orchestra.

Dance company Pilobolus’ three-week residency at the Joyce Theatre continues through August 11, with re:CREATION, a dynamic collection of works from the dance company’s history. The company presents 10 ballets across two programs, Dreams and Memory, including two New York City premieres of new works.
