Broadway alum Daniel Yearwood will succeed Jordan Fisher as Anthony Hope in the current revival of Sweeney Todd at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre beginning June 21. As recently announced, Fisher is set to play his final performance June 18.
Yearwood made his Broadway debut in 2018 as a replacement ensemble member in Once On This Island. He has since appeared in Ink and Hamilton, playing John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the latter. His casting in Sweeney reunites him with Hamilton creative team members director Thomas Kail and music director Alex Lacamoire.
Directed by 2023 Tony nominee Kail, the revival opened March 26—read reviews here. The production won two 2023 Tony Awards June 11, for Natasha Katz's lighting design and Nevin Steinberg's sound design. The Sondheim revival was nominated for eight Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical, plus nods in the Leading Actor and Actress categories for stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford.
The production features Jonathan Tunick's full, 26-piece orchestration for the first time on Broadway since the 1979 original production, under the baton of three-time Tony winner Lacamoire. A forthcoming cast album, to be released by Warner Music Group’s Arts Music and Reprise Records, is produced by Lacamoire and co-produced by Kail, and can be pre-saved on Spotify here.
The Broadway cast also includes Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things) as Tobias, Tony Award winner and Laurence Olivier Award nominee Ruthie Ann Miles (The King and I) as Beggar Woman, Maria Bilbao (On Your Feet!) as Johanna, Jamie Jackson (The Last Ship) as Judge Turpin, John Rapson (Les Misérables) as Beadle Bamford, and Nicholas Christopher (Hamilton) as Pirelli.
