Disney is in negotiations with Adam Shankman (Hairspray, Rock of Ages films) to take over directing Disenchanted, the long-in-development sequel to Disney’s 2007 hit musical film Enchanted, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The trade paper also reports that Amy Adams is expected to recreate the role of Giselle she played in the live-action fairytale about a singing cartoon princess who crosses over into the highly incongruous real world of modern New York City.

The paper quoted unnamed sources saying Disenchanted “is set 10 years after the first movie, with Giselle finding herself questioning her happily ever after, and accidentally triggering events that make everyone's lives turn upside down in both the real world and in the animated kingdom of Andalasia.”

No other casting for the new movie has been reported. Filming is expected to begin in summer 2017.

As reported by Playbill.com in July 2014, J. David Stem and David N. Weiss are writing the sequel, which was originally announced to be directed by Anne Fletcher. The film will be produced again by Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld.

Adams starred in the 2007 film opposite Patrick Dempsey. Also in the cast were Tony winner Idina Menzel, James Marsden, Timothy Spall, Rachel Covey and Susan Sarandon with Julie Andrews voicing the narrator. The 2007 film has a score by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. No official word on whether they will do the sequel.

The Disenchanted film is not related to the 2014 Off-Broadway stage musical of the same title, which spoofs Disney princesses.
