Awards Drama Desk Awards Go Gender Neutral

The theatrical honors recognize Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway productions.

The Drama Desk Awards are the latest theatrical honors to go gender neutral, following similar moves by the Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Awards. The change will debut with the 2023 edition of the honors, the awards' 67th.

Nominations are set to be announced April 27 during the noon hour on NY1, by Frank DiLella and Tony winner Donna McKechnie.

The updated categories will include Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play, Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical, Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play, and Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical. Each category will have twice as many nominees as before and two winners. Voters will be invited to vote twice for each category.

The Drama Desks recognize the best in Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway theatre. This year's nominating committee comprises Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Daniel Dinero, Peter Filichia, Kenji Fujishima, Margaret Hall, and Charles Wright.
