Additional casting has been announced for the upcoming Broadway revival of Mark Medoff’s Children of a Lesser God, which begins March 22, 2018, at Studio 54.
Produced by Hal Luftig and directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon, the production stars the previously announced Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff in their Broadway debuts.
Drama Desk nominee Kecia Lewis (Dessa Rose), Julee Cerda, Treshelle Edmond, and John McGinty will round out the cast.
The play tells the story of a powerful personal connection between a teacher at a school for the deaf and the woman he meets there. The original 1980 production won the Tony Award for Best Play, as well as Tonys for Best Actor John Rubinstein and Best Actress Phyllis Frelich. The movie adaptation won Marlee Matlin an Oscar.
Having made her Broadway debut in Dreamgirls, Lewis has also appeared in Broadway’s Big River, The Gospel at Colonus, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Once on This Island, Chicago, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Leap of Faith. Children of a Lesser God marks Cerda’s Broadway debut, though she was recently seen in the feature film Passengers and on Showtime’s Homeland. Edmond is fresh off her Broadway debut in the 2015 Deaf West revival of Spring Awakening. Actor John McGinty is also making his Broadway debut. All four actors, in addition to Jackson and Ridloff, were seen in the Berkshire Theatre Group production of the play earlier this year.
Children of a Lesser God features scenic design by Tony Award winner Derek McLane, costume design by Dede Ayite, and lighting design by Tony Award nominee Mike Baldassari. Casting for the production is by Telsey + Company.
